The Disciplines of Running

These days I want to RUN, and I’m happy to see a lot of other people do too, though a lot of people taking their feet for a spin don’t look very happy about their decision to run.

I love the techniques of running, but right now I’m thinking about the disciplines of running, the ones it requires from me and teaches me, I have made a non-exhaustive list: The discipline to search for ease and pleasure in every step, the discipline to pace yourself to your leisurely breath, of releasing your eyes from the ground and trusting your feet, of being stared at for running barefoot, of stopping a lot, of instantly following the impulse to run as fast as you can, of being overtaken a lot, of leaving the watch at home. The discipline of replacing thoughts of what running should be for an exploration of what running could be for you.
